The SRTS Instructor training session is sometimes referred to as the “train-the-trainer” or “TTT” session. More details about this class are below.

  • This class is scheduled once or twice a year, or by request with a minimum number of participants.
  • This class is an online 2.5 hour Zoom call session that is free to anyone who either a) wants to learn more about or become a paid instructor as part of BWANH’s Safe Routes to School program, and b) is also open to existing instructors who may need a refresher before getting stated again.  While this class is primarily intended to bring new instructors up to speed on the program and the curriculum, the class is also open to adults who simply want to know more about biking & walking safety concepts for kids. Existing instructors who have already been through this training program are not required to take this class again, but are welcome to attend if they desire a refresher.
  • This popular program has been going on since 2016, but was essentially shut down last year and beginning of this year due to COVID.
  • In this “train-the-trainer” session, you’ll learn all the nitty gritty details of how the Safe Routes to School bike-walk safety program operates, and how much money you can make as an instructor.

Here’s a summary of what the session will cover:

    • A basic review of how the BWANH Safe Routes to School kids bike-walk safety sessions work. The 45-minute instructional sessions are FREE to schools & qualifying organizations, but instructors are PAID through a grant from NH DOT (Dept of Transportation) which BWANH administers.
    • As part of participating in this program, there are a handful of simple forms to be filled out. We’ll walk through those, as well as the simple process for submitting your “request for reimbursement” which is how instructors get paid through this program.
    • Instructors who participate in this program get paid an hourly rate for both instruction time and for travel time. At this session, we’ll talk more about how this works.
    • The instructors are “certified” (taught) on how to present the bike-walk safety info via this 2.5-hour training session.
    • The session will present all the information & materials instructors will need to perform the class. Instructors will receive the printed & online PowerPoint Presentation, printed safety material handouts, reflective stickers to give away to the kids, and more.
    • The only things you need to supply of your own for the presentations is your own bike and helmet to use for demonstrational purposes.
    • The presentations are typically done indoors, with kids seated, no on-the-bike, in an assembly style format, usually a gymnasium or auditorium.
    • Instructors will be taught how to present basic biking & walking safety concepts to NH students, typically in grades 3 through 8.
    • Basic bike-walk safety concepts presented include: visibility (wearing bright colors, lights etc), bike control (braking, balance, steering etc), situational awareness, traffic awareness, rules of the road, crosswalks safety, sidewalk safety, helmet safety, and more.
    • Folks who have completed this session will receive a Certificate of Completion, and printed materials will be mailed to your home address.

  • Note that some folks attend this session who have no desire or availability to become an instructor, but who are organizing events\programs at schools or community groups (bike rodeos or in-school or summer camp programs etc)  and want to know the basics of kids bike\walk safety. Feel free to forward this to folks in that category.
