Mission
The Salem Bicycle Pedestrian Corridor Committee is created to coordinate, plan and recommend comprehensive bicycle/pedestrian pathway improvements, facilities, programs, plans, and projects to the Town of Salem Board of Selectmen and other appropriate boards and committees for consideration and implementation for the Salem community.
Objectives
In order to provide health, recreation, and transportation benefits to the Town, the SBPC Committee shall plan and promote the following:
- the full integration of bicycling and walking into community transportation policies and practices;
- incentives for increasing bicycling and walking;
- best practices in bicycling and walking facilities development;
- bicycle and pedestrian programs designed for children and seniors;
- pedestrian and bicycle transportation as a means for commuting;
- as a means to expand economic development for the community;
- safety programs for bicycling and walking;
- physical and mental health benefits of walking and bicycling;
- and alternative means for funding for bicycle and pedestrian programs and facilities.
Committee Responsibilities
- Serve as the Town’s primary resource for expertise on bicycle and pedestrian issues.
- Actively build the committee’s collective knowledge of the barriers to riding, walking and best practices for creating a great bicycling and walking town, using outside expertise and community input.
- Policy & Implementation
- Guide the development and implementation of a bicycle and pedestrian master plan beginning with the Route 28 Corridor project.
- Recommend funding and capital improvement opportunities and priorities.
- Recommend programs and policies affecting the implementation of pedestrian improvements.
- Provide planning and guidance to the Planning Board for private public partnerships.
- Promotion, Education and Enforcement
- Guide the promotion of bicycle and walking for transportation, recreation, and health purposes.
- Advise the Town on pedestrian safety and accessibility through education and enforcement of traffic laws and other ordinances.
- Create performance standards for bicycle and pedestrian facilities and services.
