Hands Across the Merrimack
.
Cross-section of proposed bridge - arches not likely
Introduction:
A group of citizens led by Helen Closson was organized in 2001 to transform the existing and abandonded trestle bridge into a landmark pedestrian bridge over the Merrimack River. The bridge will be at the crossroads of the now developing pedestrian trails, and will demonstrate Manchester's commitment to the new parks being developed on both sides of the river. Through the efforts of former Mayor Robert Baines the State has already appropriated the sum of $600,000 for the construction of the bridge. In 2007, Mayor Frank Guinta renewed efforts to complete the project plus other bike-ped trails in the Manchester area. Hands Across the Merrimack hopes to raise, through private donations, one and quarter million dollars for construction and maintenance of the bridge. Other funds will come from the City and from Federal monies. The estimated cost of the project will be about 2.4 million dollars.
Project updates:
April 11, 2008: The official ribbon-cutting opening ceremony was attended by US Senator John Sununu and many Manchester officials. The rain did not dampen the spirits as the Hands Across the Merrimack Bridge is now open to the public!
December 4, 2007: An article in the Manchester Daily Express about the project may be viewed here
November 30, 2007: Work on the bridge stopped with the onset of winter and the need to not interfere with Bald Eagles fishing in the Merrimack River near the bridge. Work will continue about April 1, 2008.
